All my life I wanted to race at Talladega. But the night before that contest, I sat in my apartment shakin’ like a leaf. Me, Lightnin’ Jack Davis; the guy who went around sayin’ he could beat the devil. My big promo poster showed me leanin’ against the side of my car, black number 21, with my catchphrase at the bottom: Speed is my friend.

Okay, so I was arguing with this guy, online. I was saying how stupid the idea of time travel was: even if you could travel through time, the galaxy would move out from under you. You’d end up miles out in space or miles underground, and I have no idea which would be worse. My opponent sent me a link to a website claiming to give a step by step instruction for making a working time machine. Ludicrous, of course, but he wouldn’t concede the argument unless I tried it in good faith.

When Father James McLaren opened his eyes from the grand sleep of death, it was not upon the heavenly throne room. His was not the celestial vision of the enthroned Deity, but a bag of hay seeds and a pile of manure. He rose from the wheelbarrow in which his body rested and took the measure of his situation.

Shimmering white hair danced around her head, the strands like banners of light shifting with the rhythm of the dark wind. Warm air whipped at her skin with intense prejudice, the night’s single desire for her to die. To Pearl’s dismay, immortals could not be killed by mere wind, otherwise she would have been put out of her misery long before this moment.

The Corridigan Galactic Cruiser, Shmargee VinDarr cut through space like a hot knife through butter, except easier because there was less resistance from empty space than a knife, even a hot one, meets with butter.

First Lieutenant Frank Corelli looked over his straight of spades at Airman Foley, who was straight faced for a rookie. He closed his eyes for a moment and saw Foley lay down his hand, a huge kid-like grin on his face. Frank opened his eyes and tossed his cards face down. "I fold." The Endwell House overlooking Homeville had been empty for as long as anyone could remember. It was a large Gilded Age mansion, abandoned when its owner had “flown south” to avoid the long winters and lake effect snow they brought. Or maybe he, or she or they had just wanted to live on a beach, it really doesn’t matter. Church bells ring out faintly in the distance, clanging to the melody of an old church hymn I learned in my youth. I cannot remember the words nor the name of the tune, and besides, the ringing bells do nothing to comfort my wounded spirit or quench my thirst, so why would I bother myself with such semantics? Metal screamed and glass fragmented backwards through Lizzie’s vision, rushing in upon itself, each shard finding its own place in the windshield of the yellow cab. Spiderweb cracks through the glass fused and sealed into scratched clarity between the driver and the tattered wipers, choking the off-key trumpet of the car’s horn into silence. Steam rolled downwards, condensing itself into the radiator. In the middle of the intersection, the cab skidded backwards and to its right, separating itself from the grill of a city bus easily four times its size.
