I’m on my way by road and rail to visit my father in the northlands. I’m hoping he will love and accept me. Where my father lives, there are few mirror people. Because of this, we are an object of fear to some, an object of magic to others. In the cities, things are somewhat different.

Milo Peterson couldn’t remember how many of his eight years he’d spent playing in the woods behind his house. He seemed to have always gone on adventures among the tall trees and in the meadow.

Would ye like t’hear about my greatest failure? The one time in all me long years when I was outsmarted by a mortal? A mere human? Well, shut up, ye, ‘cause that’s what I’m talkin’ about today! I tease ye, of course. Telling me stories to humans is kind of what I’m all about, but perhaps I ought to explain that firstly.

"You'd be here for the dragon, then," said the old man. It was getting dark, and I couldn't make out exactly where on the riverbank his voice was coming from. He sounded as if he was chewing on something large and adhesive. "It's always the dragon," he said.

One fall evening as the yellow sun lowered in the red sky, three ghosts, their hair matted with algae and seaweed, swam upward through the waves. From the farthest depths of the sea they had come. Two hundred years had passed since the day Urdu the fisherman murdered them and threw their bodies out of his tattered boat, and these ghosts who had lived among the sea-dead could no longer suppress the memories that made them so discontent.

_ I was little more than a pup back when the vamps began overwhelming the central territories. Up until then, the wolves and the ‘pires had an understanding: The bloodsuckers stayed near the coasts, n’ the wolves ran the interior of this great country. But something snapped inside ah’ them. Maybe it was their desire to conquer. Or maybe it was their god’s hatred of the High Spirit. But I think it was on account of their low food supply. They ate the humans, and we wolves protected them. You ask me, I reckon they were mighty hungry when they reached our end of Arizona.
