Church bells ring out faintly in the distance, clanging to the melody of an old church hymn I learned in my youth. I cannot remember the words nor the name of the tune, and besides, the ringing bells do nothing to comfort my wounded spirit or quench my thirst, so why would I bother myself with such semantics?

There is really only one thing I have to keep me company here in the dark on this creaking balcony. A word. Regret. I swallow it with a gulp and it slowly melts into my bloodstream like a poison, corrupting my thoughts, dismantling my hope.

My leg is hurt. I’m not certain if it’s broken, but it’s certainly bleeding and in pain. The tourniquet I crafted from my pants leg is soaked in blood but still holding tightly. But it’s not the pain or the darkness really that’s getting to me. I’ve endured weeks of darkness. I’ve experienced my share of pain in this lifetime. It’s my daughter’s screams that send chills down my spine, that remind me that I am alive only long enough to feel death.

Her screams ceased a little while ago, but now...
